Turbomachinery

Triconex, through its turbomachinery control product line and engineering organization, has grown from an innovator, supplying first-generation electronic governors, to a full service, turnkey supplier of networked multi-system controls for combined-cycle, utility steam turbine generator, compressors, and other units.

We supply systems for a full spectrum of motor or mechanical drive gas and steam turbine applications as well. Triconex has supplied literally thousands of steam turbine and hundreds of gas turbine control system retrofits. Recently we have again blazed the trail with integrated turbine generator and integrated turbine compressor controls. These, capital saving systems have become more feasible because of the reliability and power of the TS 3000 (TMR) system.

Value Proposition Statement

A world leader in digital controls, Triconex has established itself as the leader in specialized digital turbomachinery control systems for these reasons:

  • Superior Hardware. Triconex offers the TMR-based TS 3000, which provides incomparable availability, as proven in thousands of installations. Triconex has supplied about two-thirds of the triple modular redundant control and protection systems worldwide.
  • Solutions Orientation. Triconex has always cultivated a solutions approach. We pursue challenging applications because it suits our customer-oriented focus. Triconex has often jointly developed the specifications for new applications with machinery suppliers or end-users.
  • Advanced Control Software. Triconex strives to provide the most technically advanced control algorithms available. The hardware platform has allowed the integration of the load controls and protection in the turbine control system. This approach has led to the award of a 1994 patent that includes the automatic voltage regulation (AVR) as well as the gas and steam turbine generator control to optimize the output for a given ambient temperature.

Process Reference List

Triconex/TRISEN controls can be found in many industries, controlling and protecting a large variety of turbomachinery. Some of Triconex typical turbine control experiences around the world include:

  • Gas Turbine Controls
    • Aero-Derivative Machinery
    • Large Industrial Machinery
  • Steam Turbine Controls
    • Main Reheat Turbines
    • Single and Double Extraction Turbine
  • Hydro Turbine Controls
    • Pelton Designs
    • Francis Designs

Integrated Control Solutions

Triconex has also led the industry in integrating the turbine control system with the driven equipment control requirements. Depending on the criticality of the machine train, integrated controls can be applied to either the standard or TMR hardware platform. However, for critical applications, this approach is ideally suited to our TMR solution because of its high reliability and on-line repairability. Typical samples of this successful controls approach include:

  • Integrated Turbine Compressor (ITC) Controls, which include:
    • Driver Control (i.e., steam turbine, gas turbine, electric motor, reciprocating or diesel engine)
    • Anti-Surge Control of the Compressor
    • Compressor Suction or Discharge Pressure Control
    • Compressor Load Sharing Schemes
    • Plant Process Control (steam header or process header)
  • Integrated Turbine Generator (ITG) Controls, which include:
    • Driver Control (i.e., steam turbine, gas turbine, Hydroturbine, reciprocating or diesel engine)
    • Automatic Synchronizing
    • Automatic Voltage Control
    • Generator Excitation Control
    • Megawatt, MegaVar, Power Factor Control
    • Load Sharing Schemes
    • Import/Export Power
  • Human Machine Interface (HMI), including:
    • Operator Interface and Control
    • Wide Variety of PC Workstations
    • Custom Screen Configuration
